  •  Registration and travel support for teachers in rural school districts,
  • Volunteer opportunities, and
  • Early-bird registration details.

Stipend Available to attend NCGE

The Colorado Geographic Alliance is supporting several teachers from small districts and rural areas to participate in the National Council for Geographic Education conference. Teachers from districts with under 5000 students who teach geography – either as part of social studies, science, or as a stand-alone course – are encouraged to apply. Each applicant selected will receive a stipend to cover three nights of hotel (double occupancy) in Denver as well as the cost of registration for the conference. Due to the early-bird registration deadline of May 31st, teachers should have their applications (available on the COGA homepage – http://www.uccs.edu/~coga/) to coga@uccs.edu no later than Saturday, May 25th. Applicants will be notified May 30th.

Volunteers still needed – Complimentary Registration

Volunteers are needed to keep the NCGE Annual Conference running smoothly! For example, you could sign up for three hours at the registration table, two hours for stuffing bags before the conference, field trip support, as well as two or three hours of A/V set-up, session support, assisting with book signings, and clean-up. Your registration to the conference will be complimentary if you agree to volunteer at least 15 hours. If you are interested in helping out for a couple hours or in taking advantage of the opportunity to have your registration fee waived, please contact Jackie Waite at NCGE (jwaite@ncge.org). Specific days and times will be assigned as the conference gets closer.

Early-Bird Registration for the National Council for Geographic Education Conference Ends on May 31st!

Remember that there are special discounts for Colorado educators, as well as for individuals who are members of the NCGE through the Colorado Geographic Alliance. See the NCGE website for details, and the COGA website about the special $50 NCGE membership rate for COGA members.

The Colorado State Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to support Monday, April 22 as Colorado Digital Citizenship Day. The resolution states, “We support families and schools working together with children to learn how to be safe online and how to safeguard against practices that would jeopardize each person’s individual, private information.”

The resolution goes on to say that Colorado Digital Citizenship Day will focus on the important issues facing children and their families in our 24/7 digital world.

In other activities in support of the resolution, Gov. John Hickenlooper, Denver Public Schools and DaVita will celebrate the state’s first Digital Citizenship Day with 130 fourth- and fifth-graders at University Park Elementary School, 2300 S. St. Paul St., in Denver. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 22.

Donnell_KaylogoThis workshop, held in Denver on March 21, 2013 was co-hosted by CEE-Trust, Gates Family Foundation, and University of Colorado School of Public Affairs.

We know how hard it is to implement something new – especially something that re-thinks every aspect of schools as we know them today. The Donnell-Kay Foundation has hosted blended learning summits in the past. This workshop took a different tack because the goal was to learn about redesigning education systems that incorporate blended learning. What do we really know about what works? What obstacles are you likely to face, and how can you mitigate them? What do you need to think about beyond hardware and software? This workshop explored these questions and provided actionable steps for school leaders.

If you would like to review the lessons from the day, or share the experience with colleagues, download the powerpoint and watch the the session videos on YouTube. The full resource list shared at the event is available by clicking here.

In coordination with this workshop, the Donnell-Kay Foundation produced a report on two local examples of blended learning.
